Despite the many years that have passed since the end of the Second World War, the story of IG Farbenindustrie AG continues to interest scholars and journalists. There is still an ongoing dispute regarding the extent to which the directors and managing staff was responsible for the concern's support of the Nazi movement and the robbing of chemical plants in occupied territories. Perhaps most of all is the charge that these company officials were guilty of exploiting Auschwitz concentration camp inmates as slave labourers and even partcipating in their extermination.

The Monowitz camp was the largest of ten camps belonging to IG Farben. It was also one of the largest industrial labour camps of its kind in the whole of occupied Europe. By the end of 1944 this particular camp held almost as many as 11.000 prisoners. Research into the history of KL Auschwitz sub-camps has been conducted at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum for over the last thirty years. This study of Piotr Setkiewicz is one of the most recent monographs in the published series.
